Chairman’s View of the AGM
Another AGM has come and gone and it would appear that there were more members
present this year than in previous years. Why should that be? Well obviously it
was an electable AGM and perhaps members were interested in what the current
Board - and indeed the prospective Board Members - had to say?
Perhaps it was because we had introduced our new job distribution
engine ‘Concierge’ and members were interested to hear the way in which it
worked, although I would be a little surprised if that were the reason as I had
gone into quite a long question and answer session with the Editor in the
February edition of Call Sign where I explained exactly how our unique system
operated.
Perhaps, and more likely, it was because of a rumour that had
circulated explaining how Dial-a-Cab Board Members and myself were going to be
"annihilated" by a few members and after all, what better Sunday afternoon
sport could there be than to watch the BoM squirm!
However, I hope that those members who attended will confirm that
the "annihilation" never materialised and all that those few members succeeded
in doing was to make themselves look foolish and confirm how little they really
understood about the Society. After all, we’ve had another excellent year, yet
some of the members who spoke were extremely negative. Perhaps it was some
‘macho’ thing to prove to everyone present how tough they are and how they
aren’t frightened of anyone!
On the whole, I thought it was a really good AGM, one that I
thoroughly enjoyed and for those who haven’t heard, I would like to report that
the sitting BoM were returned by the members. What was also extremely
encouraging was how many members present were prepared to go to the lectern and
say something positive. |
 On the reverse
side however, what I found particularly
disappointing and somewhat disturbing was all
the nonsense and misinformation that was
supplied to two or three of our members and
which appears to have come from an outside
source
whose only interest is to see the demise of
Dial-a-Cab. These same members are allowing
themselves to be used as pawns, because that
is what they are, in order to do the ‘dirty
work’ for someone who is not even a member of
Dial-a-Cab.
Takeover and Departure!
You will all probably remember reading in the
Dial-a-Cab Annual Report, my explanation of
Radio Taxis demutualisation and how I expected
them to go on the acquisition trail. Well,
just three months after writing that piece,
they have now made their first acquisition in
the shape of Xeta, the radio taxi circuit that
was formed by former ComCab MD, Geof Kaley.
It appears that they have acquired approximately 300 taxis and a
further 100 cars - although I think it fair to
say that in the main the cars operate in the
north-western suburbs of London.
What the exact intention of RTG is at the moment appears to be
unclear, however, what is certain is that in
the short term both RTG and Xeta will operate
as separate units.
Whilst writing of ComCab, on the very day that the announcement of
Xeta being taken over by Radio Taxis Group,
ComCab’s MD Mike Galvin left their employment.
Mike had been with ComCab for around 19 years
and was Geof Kaley’s |
number two for sixteen of them
before taking over the MD’s job
for three years after Geof Kaley’s departure.
I always had a very good working relationship with Mike and I would
like to wish him well in anything that he chooses to do for the future.
Mike’s position has been taken over by Jaspal Singh from the
Singapore-based parent company Comfort/DelGro. In addition to overseeing ComCab,
Mr Singh will be responsible for overseeing all the Comfort/DelGro interests in
the UK and Ireland, including their bus companies. I believe his official title
is Chief Executive Officer of the United Kingdom and Ireland Business Unit.
Consequently, I would like to officially welcome Mr Singh to the London Taxi
Industry, I know he will find his time here interesting and I can assure him
that it will be exceptionally educational and informative.
Aerial Sites and Signals
I have written a great deal in the past about our signals - or indeed the lack
of them.
Consequently, you will be delighted to know that we’ve had some
Crystal Filters fitted to all our aerial sites in order to try and improve
those signals.
As I’ve explained in the past, the sites are transmitting well,
it’s just that when our cabs send a signal back, the sites are then
experiencing difficulties due to the ‘noise’ on each site. This is coming from
all types of equipment - from computers to lifts - and what the Filters will do
is to help alleviate that noise.
The first signs are very promising and it appears that the
performance of some sites has increased by up to 11%. However, this is an
ongoing upgrade and the next phase is due to be completed at the beginning of
April, so hopefully in the not too distant future you will all see an
improvement, even if you have not already done so.
