As he receives the terrible news that the son of a close friend has been murdered, Tom Whitbread pours out his thoughts and asks the question… While writing my Complaints article, I received a phone call from a close friend of mine with some very sad news. His brother - another close friend of mine - is the father of 16-year-old Robert Levy, the young boy who was tragically murdered after being stabbed in the neck close to Hackney Town Hall. Robert was a quiet, polite young lad whose father taught him right from wrong and to show respect to others. He died trying to protect another boy from getting hurt. His uncle rushed to the scene from his workplace in Morning Lane and was with his nephew as he lay on the pavement - his young life slowly ebbing away. This is a tragic waste of life that will continue to happen until we get a government who realise that you have to set a punishment that deters anyone from carrying a knife or gun. If one of these knife-carrying imbeciles thinks that he will only get a sentence of around 7 years but be out in less |

Scotland Yard - not too great if you are in a life or death situation… But nothing will change until we get a no-tolerance attitude to crime. Tony Blair should stop pandering to the woolly sock, anorak-wearing do-gooders, then maybe he and David Blunkett would do the job they are well paid to do - protect the law-abiding majority. I run a charity that helps terminally ill children, but it seems that nowadays more young children are dying due to street crime than terminal illnesses. There is one situation that the government can tackle immediately, but have they got the guts to address the problem and possibly become unpopular with a minority? I just pray it happens before I receive another phone call informing me of another friend’s child who has died in similar tragic circumstances. I say this knowing that many readers of this magazine are friends of mine… Tom Whitbread |
