WEST COAST TRAINS – NEW ARRANGEMENTS
Following our preview meeting with West Coast Trains, it was
clear to all that the nine-day blockade from the 29
May to 6 June ran relatively smoothly for all
concerned. As you know, it was the first time - certainly that I
can recall since joining the board 14 years ago - that there
have been a vast number of trips offered to drivers whereby
there was a need to arrange over- night accommodation! What is
more pleasing is the news that WCT have verbally offered us an
extension to the contract through to September 2005. Until this
has been confirmed in writing, then we must ensure during the
weekends ahead that our service do not waiver in any way shape
or form so as to alter their decision. In addition to the
weekend work, there are two additional nine-day blockades
scheduled up to January 2005. Blockade Opening Times Printed below are the WCWC zone opening times for this coming blockade. Due to the confusion of some drivers on the last occasion, you will notice that each of the nine working days has its own booking-in day. Only the double-shift will open every other day for booking-in. As I’ve written before, drivers must wait for DaC staff to contact them with their details. Due to the operation being a manual one, it can take a few days before you are contacted. This is caused by the time it takes to check that drivers have followed the booking-in procedures correctly. Contact details have to be looked up and printed off. Stations then have to be allocated and finally telephone calls have to be made. Our experience tells us that this can take a couple of days per shift, but what increases the time is when drivers ignore our instructions and phone us, causing staff to become distracted. Another problem that can prevent delays is keeping your mobile phone switched on and with you at all times. It’s not uncommon for staff to take up to three days of constant ringing before they are able to speak with a driver. As the vast majority of drivers have taken part in the work before, the actual time of the phone call from staff should in theory get quicker, because the only information drivers need to know is the station, start time and possibly hotel name. Remember also only book in to the WCWC zone if you are absolutely certain that you are available to work on the day the zone is open for. A driver just testing the system to see if they can get in does nothing more than waste time. Drivers in recent weeks have chanced their arm when booking in by not following fleet messages. Due to the amount of complaint telephone calls received from drivers who do work the system correctly, we have no alternative now but to issue a formal complaint against any driver not adhering to our instructions. VIRGIN TRAINS 9-DAY BLOCKADE PROGRAM: 29 AUGUST UNTIL 6 SEPTEMBER 2004 Drivers wishing to work with virgin trains over the 9-day blockade period, booking-in times and days are as follows…
Example: Drivers who wish to work Monday 31
August evening shift northern region, book in WCWC zone on
Wednesday 11 August at 17:40 (see above table). Keith Cain |
