London's Liberty Radio (963 and 972am) recently had the first stage
of a (possible) £1million radio quiz held exclusively for cab drivers. The
idea came about on the Alton Andrews show when together with his gorgeous
producer Accalia Hipwood, Alton decided that they would find a clever cabbie
and turn him into a (possible) millionaire! The game was slightly different
to Carlton TV's ultra successful 'Who wants to be a Millionaire' in that you
would win a small prize at a time (£5), and if successfully beating off
your opponent, you would then come back the following day for another fiver
against another cabby and if successful, you would repeat that another
200,000 times and cop the million quid.
According to Liberty Radio - famous for playing the hits of the
past thirty years - if one of our drivers were to lose on his or her
199,999th visit, Alton would spend the last fiver out of his own pocket to
make up the million.
"After all," said Alton, "you can't have a
quiz with a top prize of £999,995 and I don't suppose I'll be doing it
again!!!"
Dial-a-Cab's first volunteer was Alex Constantinou (N5) who
was up against a gentleman known as Del-Boy, apparently of the unlicensed
fraternity (Express Cabs) or possibly one of the newly licensed batch. He
had answered four of his five questions correctly meaning that for Alex to
climb that first rung of the ladder to £1million (which the winner -
according to Call Sign calculations - should arrive at the top of in July
2401), Alex would need to answer 5 out of 5. Well, there's no easy way to a
million!
Alex's voice arrived to a fanfare. Knowing the whole of

£1M...!

Alton Andrews and his lovely producer Accalia Hipwood
Dial-a-Cab were tuned in, Alton was about to start the questioning. Alex
jumped in quickly with a protest...
"You asked the other bloke easy questions...!"
Alton, realising that Alex was nervous with his first fiver at
stake, tried to calm him down.
"Bit of a big-head are you then...!!!"
Then came the questions....
1...Which disease killed almost half the population of Europe
in the 14th century? 2...What colour is Art & Literature in Trivial
Pursuits? 3...What is the Japanese word for Divine Wind? 4...Which two
groups of Islands belong to Spain? And finally, which direction was
Manchester from Leeds?
Unfortunately Alex got just two correct... Art & Lit in
Trivial pursuits is Brown and Manchester is to the west of Leeds.
So Alex's dreams of the million ended just 199,999 trips short!
"I'd rather have come second to Fred Housego than Del-Boy,"
Alex told Call Sign afterwards, "but it was still great fun..."
Fortunately (!!!), Del-Boy didn't last long after being
defeated by Johnny Carter of Radio Taxis London who then went on to
defeat

Alex Constaninour (N5)
DaC's Martin Hizer (M47), but not before Martin had 'sportingly'
announced that RTL had no work and that DaC had lots! Obviously 'Cabby to
Cabby' is developing into a real friendly contest!
The next day, John came up against Call Sign's 'Politically
Incorrect' writer, Chas Kissin (P99J) who bought glory to this mag when he
scored a perfect 5 out of 5 to prove that Call Sign only employs
ultra-intelligent correspondents. As the new champion, Chas followed up
with another perfect score the next day before going out on a tiebreak on
his third appearance.
Later DaC Champions were Russell Poluck and Call Sign's Steve
Shaller.
Liberty Radio has asked Call Sign to express their thanks
to all the Dial-a-Cab drivers who volunteered for the quiz. The quiz was
carried out in a spirit of fun and even if you aren't on it, you can still
listen to Liberty's great sounds from the past three decades on 963 or
972am...
The correct answers to the questions Alex got wrong were:
1.Bubonic Plague: 3.Kamikaze: 4.Balearic and Canary Islands...

'FUEL POWER' UPDATE
A new and final set of DaC drivers are now road testing the Fuel
Power diesel supplement. These drivers are evening or night men so as
to try to take the traffic situation out of the calculations a bit
more. Trying to compare fuel consumptions on a daily basis with
drivers who work during the daytime hours, is very difficult. However,
the Dial-a-Cab drivers who were asked to test Fuel Power, really put
themselves out to get the results which we have been publishing
monthly.
Testing is also being carried out alongside taxis by
other forms of motorised transport including buses.
The latest batch of four DaC Call sign volunteers are Alf Cook (A62)
with his S-reg TX1, Peter McCalister (F27) in an N-reg Metro, John
Davis (H77) with a W-reg TTT and Gordon Mowatt (Y8) in his S-reg TX1.
Their first report will be in the October issue of Call
Sign.
Any driver wishing to carry out his own test can phone
Bernie on 07956 921 699. He will arrange to meet you in town somewhere
with a supply of Fuel Power.
